History of UTG
Today UTG, Inc. serves as the holding company for Universal Guaranty Life Insurance Company, Cumberland Woodlands, LLC and Stanford Wilderness Road, LLC. Through this diverse mix of business ventures and investments, we are able to reach into different markets and balance the ups and downs of an ever-changing economy.

1966
Universal Guaranty Life Insurance Company was formed
Universal Guaranty Life Insurance Company formed in Columbus, Ohio, in 1966 and sold individual life insurance policies to families throughout the Midwest.

1984
United Trust, Inc was incorporated
United Trust, Inc. was incorporated in Springfield, Illinois, and through its subsidiary, United Trust Assurance Company, sold life insurance policies in Illinois.

1992
Universal Guaranty Life Insurance Company was acquired by United Trust, Inc
In 1992, United Trust acquired Universal Guaranty Life Insurance Company. Today, Universal Guaranty holds all of the company’s insurance policies.

1998
Relationship began with First Southern National Bank
In 1998, United Trust began a relationship with First Southern National Bank through the common ownership of entrepreneur and businessman, Jess Correll (Correll Group). Soon after its acquisition, United Trust, Inc. was formally renamed as United Trust Group, Inc. Today, the Correll Group is the majority stockholder of both companies.

2005
United Trust Group, Inc. becomes UTG, Inc.
In 2005, United Trust Group, Inc. completed the final steps of a series of mergers and consolidations, creating one holding company and one life insurance subsidiary, Universal Guaranty. Through this process, United Trust Group, Inc. became UTG, Inc. In addition to the mergers and consolidations that formed UTG, the company, and those it has assumed over time, has a strong history of acquiring life insurance companies, some with histories and policies dating to the 1920s.

2016
Corporate headquarters relocated to Stanford, Kentucky
Together, UTG and FSB have formed an organization covering the full range of financial services from banking to life insurance and annuities. In April 2016, UTG relocated its corporate headquarters to Stanford, Kentucky, where First Southern Bancorp is also headquartered. Through this move, the two companies will be able to strengthen their relationship with each other and increase the level of efficiency and service shown to customers and investors in both organizations.

Through our connection with First Southern, we already had relationships with local businesses, including The Stanford Inn at Wilderness Road, Kentucky Soaps & Such, Esther’s Wellhouse, Cerulean, and The Bluebird. These businesses are all a part of Wilderness Road Hospitality and located in the heart of downtown Stanford. What began as a mission to bring life back to Stanford’s downtown has developed into a family of businesses with world-class amenities in a unique small-town setting.
